Portraits from life. The goal of portraiture, for me, is not only to represent the sitter's physical traits but also to capture their soul. I am also aware that the artist cannot separate themselves from their art, somehow my soul will also be imprinted into each work that I create, even when it is a portrait of someone else. There is a famous Oscar Wilde quote that sums this up better than I am able:
"Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter. The sitter is merely the accident, the occasion. It is not he who is revealed by the painter; it is rather the painter who, on the coloured canvas, reveals himself."
Though I managed to achieve a great physical likeness to each of my sitters I do not feel like I was able to achieve the deeper goal of portraying the soul. As they were done in a short time period and in a classroom setting, I was unable to pose the models as I would have liked. I look forward to taking my portraits further in future independent projects.
